What should be considered when disinfecting water?

When disinfecting water, it's important to follow the correct procedure. Incorrect use can, in the worst case, lead to contaminated water, which may even cause illness.

Before using the drinking water filter for the first time, the instruction manual should be read carefully. This provides information on how to operate/use the specific model or variant. Generally, it's difficult to go wrong when using water filters. The devices are easy to use and robustly constructed.

Which type of water disinfection is the right one?

Before selecting a water purification device or a chemical method in powder or liquid form, you should consider the intended use. Our product range includes many different products. Water filters differ particularly in their performance. While some water filters primarily remove pathogens, E. coli bacteria, and pests, others also eliminate chlorine, heavy metals, and impurities. Some water filters even improve the taste.

Most water filters are quite lightweight. Many models have a flow rate of approximately 0.3 liters per minute. In addition to traditional water filters, powder or liquid versions are also available, which disinfect and preserve drinking and utility water. These products can keep water fresh for several months.

The choice of water disinfection product depends primarily on the intended application and individual needs. However, you generally can't go wrong with the products in our range, as they come from renowned brand manufacturers and have proven themselves in practice.

Making water drinkable without chemicals

This is how you purify water from nature

It can happen that you run out of clean water while traveling. If you don't have a professional water filtration system and also don't have any chemical tablets or powders or water purification liquids with you, an alternative method can be used with just a few simple means:

The best option is a homemade water filter consisting of several layers. For this, you'll primarily need grasses, sand (clean everything as thoroughly as possible beforehand), and charcoal. Ideally, you'd use a coffee filter, which, due to its light weight and versatility, you should always have on hand. Alternatively, you can cut up a plastic bottle, making holes in the bottom for the filtered water to flow through.

The bottom layer of the filter should contain a coffee filter, or alternatively grass and leaves, ideally straw. Next comes a layer of sand, or, if necessary, soil. Then a layer of ground charcoal (the charcoal should be as finely ground as possible). Finally, another layer of sand or soil should be added, followed by another layer of coffee filter or grass.

The entire contents should be boiled after filtering to be on the safe side. Filtering only removes the largest impurities; it does not disinfect the water. One final recommendation: Flowing water is always preferable to stagnant water.

What substances can contaminate water?

There are three groups of contaminants: organisms, chemicals, and suspended solids. In the worst-case scenario, water can contain four groups of organisms: multicellular organisms, single-celled organisms, bacteria, and viruses.

Boiling

Boiling water does not remove suspended solids or chemicals. However, single-celled and multicellular organisms, bacteria, and viruses are reliably killed by boiling. The water should boil vigorously for at least 10 minutes. Further information on water purification/filtration can be found in our expert tip above.

Germ-free water - what methods are there?

Water disinfection by boiling: Boil water for at least 10 minutes and (in principle) it's ready to drink. Advantages: No chemicals needed, no additional equipment required, cost-effective, and very reliable if boiled for a reasonable time. Disadvantages: Fuel is needed, the boiling point of water decreases with increasing altitude – while the boiling time increases, the taste and smell of the water are not improved, and chemical substances may remain in the water.

Chemical water disinfection:

This method chemically kills pathogens in water by adding drops, powder, or tablets. Advantages: Extremely easy and quick to use without much effort, small packaging volume, long-lasting preservation, disinfection of large quantities of water at once is possible. Disadvantages: Taste and smell of the water may be affected, high cost per liter of disinfected drinking water, long reaction times of over 30 minutes, chemical substances may remain in the water.

Mechanical water disinfection:

Depending on the filter used, bacteria, viruses, and protozoa are filtered out of the water. Some water filters also have activated carbon elements for taste neutralization. Advantages: Reliable disinfection, no fuel required, durable, with activated carbon filter improves taste and odor, even filters out some chemicals, water can be drunk immediately. Disadvantages: Additional weight and bulk, high purchase price, filter elements can become clogged and require frequent cleaning, pumping can be strenuous.
