Indispensable in the outdoor sector: The lighter

In many situations, a lighter plays a crucial role – provided it's suitable for outdoor use. The following tips from ASMC will help you choose the ideal lighter.

Safety is our top priority.

To prevent fires or damage to fields, forests, and meadows when lighting a field stove or campfire, proper handling and any applicable restrictions on use must be observed. Tip: If the lighter is carried in a tightly sealed plastic envelope, it can also be used in damp/wet environments, such as in areas with rainy seasons. Otherwise, reliable ignition cannot be guaranteed.

Storm lighters are the right tool even in adverse outdoor conditions.

The classic among windproof lighters is the legendary Zippo. This is a petrol lighter with a flint whose flame won't go out in light to moderate winds. The foam inside absorbs the lighter fluid, and capillary action draws the fuel up the wick. For refilling on the go, there's the Zippo Power Kit, which includes a fuel tank, a spare flint, and the necessary tools for installation.

Glow-point or jet-flame lighters can be ignited even in stormy conditions. These are special gas lighters. However, they cannot be used in very low temperatures.
The Fox Outdoor functional gas lighter is particularly practical, as it combines a knife, a corkscrew and a bottle opener.

Expert tip: Swedish steel - One of the best methods for making fire

Since the Swedish army was looking for a way to start a fire in any weather with as few tools as possible, they "improved" the so-called Swedish steel or carbon steel. It's not quite accurate to say it was "invented," as this method of fire-making already existed in Roman times. Because matches obviously fail in bad weather or break too easily, a different approach was needed. Resourceful developers created an alloy that produces sparks when quickly rubbed or struck. Sharp-edged metals or stones can be used for this purpose, which limits the amount of material required and carried. Another advantage is that it works at any altitude, even on high mountain expeditions. Ideally, such a tool can be carried as a keychain in your gear.

Questions: Lighters

How do the lighters in the product range differ from regular lighters?

Except for the camouflage lighter, which is essentially a regular lighter with a camouflage design, all our lighters are specifically designed for outdoor use. These typically use lighter fluid instead of gas, which is considered more wind-resistant and reliable.

Special features also ensure water resistance (not all models) and of course we also offer the classic Zippos.

Petrol or gas, what's the difference?

Petrol lighters are considered all-weather lighters, whereas standard (butane) gas lighters are more commonly known as disposable. Both types are available in our shop. Gas lighters operate without a wick, while petrol lighters use one. They draw the fuel upwards via capillary action, where it mixes with oxygen (the oxidizer) and is burned. Petrol lighters generally produce a more consistent and voluminous flame than butane lighters. They also have a distinct smell of lighter fluid, whereas butane gas is virtually odorless and not at all noticeable.
