Headscarves aren't about warmth. Quite the opposite: they're designed to protect the head from the heat without adding too much bulk. At the same time, some versions of this garment also offer protection from wind, dust, and sand. It's no coincidence that men living in desert regions of the world almost exclusively wear the "kufiya," also known as the "Palestinian scarf," "bandana," or "shemagh." Arab and Turkish people use headscarves almost as their standard head covering.
The lightweight material is unobtrusive yet proves its worth in a variety of weather conditions, especially in warm climates with loose soil. For Western Europeans, spontaneity is key: many models can be draped flexibly, used as a scarf when needed, or packed away compactly in a bag. This keeps the gear readily accessible in a jacket or safari trousers, which can be a welcome feature in the changeable weather of Germany.
For various purposes, the models are available in different shapes, colors, and camouflage patterns, such as black, red, with camouflage or other prints. This also includes fun versions like a pirate bandana or with werewolf teeth. This makes it relatively easy to "transform" yourself for Carnival.
Traditional all-rounders and modern designs
The classic version is a shemagh made of lightweight cotton. This generously cut scarf offers a wide range of uses, including those of bikers. Longer models, which can easily be styled and trimmed to fit a turban, differ from square versions with diamond patterns. A camouflage scarf provides warmth and can be combined with a hat if needed. Modern tube scarves or headscarves build upon this design concept. This compact version is exceptionally versatile, serving as a head covering, scarf, wrist warmer, or headband. Thanks to its multifunctionality, these accessories are also popular with women and children. For sun protection, a headwrap is a great option, bringing the pirate look into the contemporary fashion world. The scarf looks stylish, tames unruly hair on a windy beach, and protects the head from UV rays.
Expert tip: How to prevent sunstroke
Although the sun is considered our friend and energy provider – including for the body – it should be enjoyed with caution. In extremely hot situations, especially those to which one may be exposed for extended periods, it's important to remember to avoid sunstroke.
If it does happen, fellow passengers should always know how to react. As a first aid measure, the affected person should of course be moved from the sun into the shade as quickly as possible.
Then you should help the person into an upright sitting position and, if possible, cool important parts of the body using damp cloths, if available. Of course, fluid intake is also important.
To prevent this from happening in the first place, a longer-lasting cooling effect and protection from the sun can be achieved by placing a damp cloth on the head.

How do you tie a headscarf?
Spread the headscarf flat.
One corner must be folded so that its point reaches the center of the square-shaped cloth.
Place your hands to the sides under the crease and position the cloth on your forehead at the desired height.
The hands must be moved towards the corners of the cloth and pulled together at the back of the head.
Hold the knot firmly with one hand to prevent it from coming undone, while using the other hand you guide the free, front end of the headscarf to the back.
Finally, tie another knot over the corner of the scarf that was brought back. This effectively holds the headscarf between the two knots.
