First aid for all outdoor activities

Anyone who enjoys spending a lot of time outdoors knows that a doctor isn't always nearby. That's why it's important to be prepared with the right equipment.

The use of a set should be practiced.

Before embarking on an outdoor activity with such a complete set, a practice session is recommended. This builds confidence in handling the contents. Should the set actually need to be used, the helper won't have to think twice; every move will be second nature. Furthermore, this allows for easy familiarization with the contents, ensuring that the user understands the purpose of each tool and aid.
Our kits are designed for ease of use and require no lengthy instructions. However, it's still important to carefully examine the contents, as this is the only way for the helper to know what's in the kit, where it's located, and how they can assist.
There are different first-aid kits for various situations. Before setting off on an outdoor activity, you should consider what kind of kit you need to be prepared for most eventualities. Their lightweight and compact packaging makes them easy to carry, so they don't add much weight to your luggage and can be transported in a backpack or bag.

Choosing the right first aid kit

Various first-aid kits are available for emergencies, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your needs and activity. When camping, for example, a first-aid kit containing plasters and bandages for various minor wounds is sufficient, as campsites are usually located relatively centrally, making it easy to reach a doctor or hospital. Furthermore, camping offers the advantage of mobility.
For strenuous outdoor activities, a surgical kit, emergency blankets and sterile wipes should definitely be carried to compensate for this lack of mobility.
Survival kits are indispensable for hikes far from civilization and during military exercises. They contain everything needed for the initial treatment of wounds. A longer expedition or march should not be undertaken without such a survival kit. In the event of an accident, a person's life may depend on the group carrying the correct first-aid equipment. ASMC offers various first-aid kits and survival kits to meet different needs. It is important that the kit is tailored to the type and duration of the expedition and that sufficient supplies are carried.

There are various DIN standards that regulate the contents of a first aid kit or bag. The most important are DIN 13157, 13164, and 13169.

Expert tip: How to treat wounds without industrial aids?

Disinfecting wounds is also possible with rubbing alcohol or tea tree oil, for example. In a truly extreme emergency, you could even use ash – which, of course, should no longer be hot. However, we cannot guarantee the effectiveness of this tip. It's best to consult your doctor before undertaking any major activity and clarify any questions you may have, such as these.

In any case, you should have compresses and sterile bandages with you; there's really no way around it, and they are indispensable if you're going to be out in nature for an extended period of time.

Questions: First aid

What should be considered when disinfecting wounds?

The first and most important point is to always rinse wounds thoroughly, of course only with clean water, ideally drinking water you've brought with you. However, water from a stream can also be used in a pinch. Afterwards, you can disinfect the wound with alcohol, ideally with an alcohol content of over 70%, if you don't have anything else available (wound disinfectant spray, etc.). Be prepared for a significant stinging sensation.
There are also convenient, individually dispensed alcohol swabs specifically designed for such situations and ready for immediate use. Urine, which can also be considered sterile, is another option. However, water is generally considered preferable because it contains fewer other substances than urine.
Also important:
Do not use disinfectant on large wounds or open fractures!
Things you should definitely avoid:
Aftershave is usually perfumed and should never be used for disinfection due to the risk of blood poisoning.

How do you stitch wounds correctly?

This is generally considered not to be attempted by laypersons, as the risk of further injury and/or blood poisoning/infection is far too high. Furthermore, the difficulty is compounded by the fact that one usually has poor or no view of the wound.
Side note:
Histoacryl, a medical tissue adhesive, is unfortunately not very suitable for outdoor activities if you want to avoid suturing a larger wound. This is because this product requires refrigerated storage.

How often should wound dressings/bandages be changed?

It is recommended to change them daily if possible.

What should you do if you feel unsure about your healthcare provision?

Of course, refreshing the first aid course required for obtaining a driver's license is a good idea. However, there are also special outdoor first aid courses that realistically simulate and practice potential emergency situations.
