Spades have a wide range of uses in outdoor areas.

A shovel should be carried when camping, in the military, or during other outdoor activities. Small and lightweight models are available that can be folded up and then take up very little space.

A spade is very easy to use.

A entrenching tool isn't just for the military; it's also useful for camping and other outdoor activities. It's small, handy, and lightweight. The handle folds down easily, allowing it to fit in a backpack or bag. Many outdoor bags have a way to attach the tool to the outside, keeping it readily accessible. Entrenching tools are used to secure tents or guy lines, or to dig holes according to specific instructions. Professional models are of very high quality, featuring a sharp metal blade.

Field spades are practical and easy to transport.

Unlike a garden spade, a field spade has a very short shaft. This shaft is equipped with a practical folding mechanism and is inherently narrower. Often, the tool can be opened and closed with just one hand. ASMC offers these spades in various designs and made from different types of steel, such as carbon steel or stainless steel. Some have a handle, while the smaller models, which can be conveniently stored in a backpack, do not.

Expert tip: If no spade is available or it has broken, there is a "natural" alternative.

The digging stick. As a substitute for a spade, it makes digging holes or removing roots easier in survival courses and similar situations. It should be made of hardwood, as this best withstands rough handling such as scraping in hard soil. You can sharpen one end to make digging a little easier initially.

Questions: Spade

What is the difference between a spade and a shovel?

The main difference here is essentially the intended use. When digging up roots, trees, or shrubs, the ground is usually somewhat harder or compacted. A spade is advisable for easier penetration into the soil in these cases, as it typically has a footplate on top, allowing you to push it down forcefully with your boots or gardening shoes. This makes it easier to penetrate even firmer soil. For sand or loose soil, however, a (large) shovel is advantageous because, unlike a spade, it doesn't have a pointed tip and therefore offers a larger surface area. This allows you to remove more material or soil at once.
The ideal spade can be purchased from ASMC.
