Gaiters offer additional protection from ankle to knee

Gaiters offer several protective functions: they prevent moisture from penetrating footwear, protect against injuries from thorns or undergrowth, and, to a certain extent, also deter ticks from getting under clothing. Gaiters are lightweight and pack down small, which is why it's always advisable to carry a pair on longer hikes. They are also a great complement to a poncho, as the latter only protects down to the knees. Gaiters are usually attached to the shoe with hooks just below the knee. Some models are also held in place by a strap that goes under the shoe. They can be put on and taken off in no time, which is probably their biggest advantage over full-body rain gear, which is rather cumbersome and time-consuming to put on. This is a significant advantage, especially when you're caught in a sudden downpour.

What do gaiters protect against?

Gaiters protect against dirt, moisture, thorns, and ticks. However, they are generally not completely waterproof, so moisture can penetrate through uncovered seams, for example. Therefore, they do not replace waterproof boots. Nevertheless, they can provide a significant first line of defense against soaked shoes.

Which gaiters for which purpose?

For mountain hikes or climbing tours, more robust models are recommended, which also contribute to stability. If heavy rain is expected, gaiters with a membrane should be preferred. Regarding size, it's best to use your shoe size as a guide, unless a universal size is offered.
