Ideally, candles and torches should be placed on a stable surface that does not contain easily flammable materials such as dry branches in the immediate vicinity. A firm and secure base ensures that no unwanted fires can be started.
While candles and torches are burning, they should always be supervised. Briefly removing them, however, is generally not a problem. Torches often have a drip tray on the bottom. This is designed to catch any dripping liquid and prevent skin injuries. Before lighting the torch, check that the drip tray is still in place. When lighting the torch, hold it horizontally.
Torches are extremely wind-resistant. Candles are not as resistant. Therefore, when using candles, you should try to choose a spot that is somewhat sheltered from the wind.
First, consider what you'll need the torches and candles for. Torches are quite easy to handle and can be carried or placed outdoors. The wax torches in our range differ primarily in size. The longer a torch is, the longer it will burn.
In addition to individual products, sets containing several torches or candles are also available. For candles, you can choose between traditional wax candles or scented varieties. These provide a pleasant aroma that promotes relaxation and brightens the atmosphere. There are also lemon-scented options that are said to help repel mosquitoes. So-called survival candles have multiple wicks, which provide even greater wind resistance. Should the wind attempt to blow the fire in a particular direction, the wicks will keep each other burning.
Materials needed: - (Relatively straight) sticks - Special torch fabric, jute sacks or pieces of cotton cloth - Wax (ideal source: old candle stubs) - Pot - Beer mats - Wire
Instructions: To make your own torches, melt the wax or wax remnants (ideally in an old pot) so you can dip the special torch cloth pieces, or alternatively, old jute sacks or cotton cloths, into it. The smaller the cloths, the more layers you can wrap around the sticks that serve as torch handles. Continue wrapping until you reach a certain thickness. While the cloths are still warm and pliable, secure them with wire. A few wraps around the stick should suffice. As a final step, place a beer mat or similar material on the stick so that it's above your hand and (well!) below the burning material. This prevents hot wax from dripping onto your hand.
Material alternatives: Where can you get wax if you don't have any on hand? Instead of wax, you can easily use resin from trees, preferably conifers (fir, spruce, pine, etc.). With resin, you don't really need a pot or beer mat as a drip guard, but a large leaf (e.g., coltsfoot) can also be used. The stick (handle) shouldn't be too short. Instead of a cotton cloth, tree bark can also be used as a substitute fabric, so your own clothing doesn't get too torn. It must be dry, however, so it should be taken from dead wood. Tip: Secure it with wire. But where do you get wire? Of course, outdoor professionals should always carry some, but in a pinch, an old piece of deer fencing might also do the trick.
There is nothing wrong with using torches in light rain. However, in heavier showers, even a torch flame can go out.
Since torches are typically used outdoors, they are more resistant to wind and water than candles. To avoid dangerous situations, it is advisable to either let the torches burn down completely or extinguish them by depriving them of oxygen (e.g., by sticking the torch flame-first into the ground or shoveling sand and soil over it with a spade).
Caution: In isolated cases, the use of water may lead to explosions.
Handle the wick carefully so that it stands upright and does not break. Ensure that no foreign objects get into the liquid wax, as these can affect the burning behavior.
One should always let the stump burn until the diameter of the burning bowl is 100% filled with liquid wax, in order to avoid a funnel when repeatedly lighting the candle, and thus not to impair the burning time of the candle.
A pillar candle never burns completely because it often has a spike hole at the base. The last bit of the candle, the length of the spike hole, cannot burn because the wick cannot be held in place in that part. In the worst case, it falls over and goes out.
