Folding chairs have a folding mechanism that allows the chair to be folded and unfolded. This design saves space and allows for quick and easy transport. The folding mechanism is usually based on a steel frame, which offers high stability. If the chair is not unfolded correctly, the frame can easily bend. Therefore, proper assembly is essential.

Which folding chair is right for me?

The choice of folding chair depends primarily on its intended use. While some folding chairs are quite small and low to the ground, other models offer more space and a higher seat. Older people should opt for folding chairs with a higher seat due to potential back problems and/or difficulty getting up. Younger people can choose lower seat heights, depending on their preference.

Build your own Swedish chair

A so-called Swedish chair also falls under the category of folding chair, even if it is not directly related to classic folding chairs, as it is only foldable as a side effect.

The chairs essentially consist of only two parts that are then slotted together, which greatly simplifies assembly and transport. Since only basic hand tools are needed for construction, it's ideally suited as a DIY project. Old slats and, for the seat, for example, old bed slats (since they are already curved) can be used as materials, meaning that apart from screws, almost no money needs to be spent on new materials.

For the seat, you use approximately 4 slats, each about 35 cm wide. These are mounted onto two thicker strips, each about 60 cm long, preferably using chipboard screws.

The backrest uses two vertical slats approximately 80 cm long. The two lower cross slats should be very strong and securely attached; the seat will later be inserted between them.

The fabric covering the backrest can be awning fabric, or, if necessary, another old fabric. The main thing is that it can withstand stress.

The chairs can be disassembled very easily for transport and storage: The seat is simply pushed into the backrest, then it takes up hardly any space.

What materials are folding chairs made of?
