The company Leatherman was founded in 1983 and is based in Portland, Oregon, USA. The Pocket Multiple Tool, popular with DIYers and professionals alike, was developed by Tim S. Leatherman in the mid-1970s after a car trip through Italy. During his tour of Europe, the engineer’s car broke down and he had no tools available. The patent for the Leatherman was filed in 1980.
